What are the black stains that form on your shingles?

The black stains that commonly build up on shingle roofs are not dirt or soot, but rather an algae. The fungus-like creature called Gloeocapsa Magma thrives in this environment and can cause shingles to discolor over time if left unchecked by appropriate measures taken against it – for example removing dead plants near your home which provide food sources for Cyanobacteria (the correct name of “fungus” associated with these organisms). These brownish patches will have tiny root systems winding their way into pores where they feed off organic material found within siding materials such as granules from damaged bricks; when you see dark spots around windowsills consider how often they may be getting wet!

Can You Pressure Wash A Roof?

The simple answer is no, you can not and should never attempt to pressure wash a shingle roof. It is debatable weather tile roofs should be pressure washed but pressure washing a shingle roof in many cases can void the warranty.

How To Clean A Shingle Roof?

Since pressure washing is not an option for cleaning shingles what other options are available for roof cleaning?

Soft washing is the best method for roof cleaning. Soft washing is done using an algicide mixture that removes the algae, moss, and lichen and the roof which helps keep it away for much longer. Soft washing is a safer, more efficient way of cleaning roofs and its’s the only approved cleaning method by ARMA.

Roof cleaning is generally best left to professionals. Power Washing Genie has high grade equipment and trialing for safe roof cleaning.

Roof Cleaning FAQ

How To Keep Your Roof Cleaner For Longer?

There are a few ways to keep your roof cleaner for longer:

  1. Keep Gutters Clean and Flowing To Prevent Water Stagnation
  2. Trim back any trees or bushes that may cover the roof
  3. Install Zinc Strips (Optional)
  4. Purchase Algae Resistant Shingles
Roof Cleaning
Heavy roof algae will dismantle both of these protective devices if roof algae is left untreated. Black roof algae appears as black stripes streaking toward your gutter line. These black spots and streaks are mistaken as stains on the roof and nothing more. Unfortunately, they are much more than an eyesore and will not go away on its own. Left untreated these specific algae will continue to expand and begin compromising your homes number one protection. This algae gets its nutrients to survive on your roof by feeding on the lime stone filler inside the asphalt shingle. Power Washing Genie roof cleaning has an inexpensive solution to remove your stains.

Roof cleaning is the process of removing algae,[1] mold, mildew, lichen and moss from roofs.[2] Also cleaning oxidation on metal roofs. Cleaning can extend the duration of a roof’s ability to function.[2] Algae and other types of build-up often form on the north and west parts of roofs that are shaded or receive less sun, and can reduce a roof’s life expectancy.

Why use a Soft Wash Roof Cleaning system and not just  Pressure Wash?

What goes into cleaning a roof properly? Why can’t I Pressure Wash it? First, roof cleaning and pressure washing are two very separate techniques with very distinct equipment. Pressure washing a roof takes years off the roof life and voids warranties. Pressure washers are designed to clean and break free grime and other stains with the use of force or PSI (pound per square inch). This unregulated pressure is the damaging factor and the wrong way to clean a roof. Power Washing Genie uses State-of-art-equipment Soft Wash Cleaning coupled with the correct cleaning agents. In fact, the correct chemical usage is the main facet in cleaning a roof properly. Pressure from the unit in the Soft Wash Cleaning System has very little to do with the end result. A Soft Wash System only delivers about 65 P.S.I, as much as a household garden hose

Roof algae: more than just a curb appeal

Well it’s Alive! Yes! Those ugly black streaks known as roof algae or the scientific name Gloeocapsa Magma, has gained notoriety in the Southeastern part of the United States.  This particular type of cyanobacteria is responsible for creating black stains and streaks on roofs. The bacteria accumulate over time as it feeds on moisture and calcium carbonate. This accumulation begins to show the black stains as the cyanobacteria develop their dark and hard UV-protective outer coating. These stains take months, or even years, to appear, but once they are present they are here to stay, living and feeding on your roof shingles. So how did they get on my roof you ask? Well you could thank your neighbor or someone in the area, algae spore are thought to break free and become air born and land on your house. These algae spore set up shop on the North Side of your house, as they begin to feed on your asphalt shingle. Every rainfall or moist weather forecast causes an increase in the growth of the roof algae / Gloeocapsa Magma. This formation of roof algae can be noticed streaking towards your gutter line. As our climate in New Jersey and surrounding areas begin to warm our problem with roof algae begins growing as well.

Learn what could be grown on your roof:

Gloeocapsa Magma

The most common class of roof algae is Gloeocapsa Magma, which is a bacterium that thrives off of water and in return expels oxygen afterward. This is what causes those black streaks on your metal roof! These dark stained areas are actually a conglomeration of algae that can prevent the sun from burning off the organic growth from your roof’s surface.

Lichen

This type of roof growth is a combination of algae and fungus. When these two growths get together they can produce living organisms living on your roof. The lichens will use their perennial root structure to attach tightly and stubbornly to your metal roofing surface which makes them extra difficult to remove. If you do not remove the Lichen in a timely manner, they can damage your roof permanently and even cause surface rust which can turn into structural damage weakening your roof’s composition.

Roof Moss

Moss is similar to Lichen in many ways since it has a strong root system called rhizoids which anchor its body to your metal roofing surface. The moss then can team up with the Lichen and create a layer of organic growth super power lichen/algae ecosystem on your roof by collecting organic dust, dirt, and organic particles to feed itself and continue to grow.

Mold

This is the one everybody is worried about especially on the inside of the home! Mold is a very un-healthy plant that can grow on your roof. Moldy roofs can be detected in brown or black areas, or it can accumulate as a stinky smelling area that can be slippery as well. Mold loves areas rich with water such as rainy climates or an area where the irrigation system is constantly spraying every morning.

Mildew

Mildew is similar to mold as in it can thrive in mildlyd wet areas and cause health issues. It can appear as a powdery substance and have many different colors and hues or shades. Colors of mildew growths can range from pink to a dark black.
