Dock Cleaning

With over 175,000 boats registered in New Jersey, it’s clear that boating is a popular pastime here in the Garden State. While it’s important to keep your boat spotless and well-maintained, you must pay the same attention to your dock. Docks are naturally close to water, which makes them a common breeding ground for mold, fungus, and algae.

Power Washing Genie provides expert dock pressure washing in the New Jersey area. We use only the latest in pressure washing technology and the best methods to thoroughly clean your dock and rid it of pollutants. For dock cleaning done right, contact us for a free estimate.

The Importance of Dock Maintenance

Any boater knows that dock maintenance is as equally important as boat maintenance. As an exterior surface, a dock is already exposed to natural elements like the sun, wind, and rain. However, as a waterfront area, the dock is also exposed to saltwater and aquatic wildlife. Without regular maintenance, your dock will show signs of wear and tear much earlier than expected.

Here are the most common reasons for dock maintenance.

Dirt, Dust, and Debris:

With boats and people coming in and out each day, a dock understandably gets dirty and dusty. You may also see loose leaves, bird droppings, spider webs, and other debris. If you allow these unwanted elements to build up, your dock will look unattractive and unappealing.

Mold, Mildew, and Algae:

Moisture and humidity can lead to an overgrowth of mold, mildew, and algae on your dock. If left untreated, these microorganisms can weaken the protective layer and cause the wood to rot.

Rust Stains:

When metal components on your dock are exposed to water and oxygen, they will begin to rust. This can lead to stains and discoloration on your dock. Rusted components can also weaken the structural integrity of your dock.

Slime and Grime:

Constant exposure to ocean water and aquatic wildlife can lead to slime and grime on your dock. This can attract other unwanted elements to your dock, which could lead to significant foundation damage.

If these maintenance issues are not taken care of, you could be looking at thousands of dollars’ worth of repairs and replacements. Not only that, but the presence of contaminants can also pose numerous health and safety hazards. If you want your dock to stay clean, beautiful, and safe, you must have regular maintenance. Pressure washing is one of the best ways to clean docks. High-pressure water can blast away even the most stubborn stains, but will not cause any damage to your dock.

Concrete

Concrete docks are very solid and durable. Over time, exposure to natural elements can lead to buildup and stains. Apply detergent or degreaser on the surface and allow it to stay for 5 to 10 minutes. Then, use about 3,000 PSI to blast away all the unwanted substances. When the concrete dock is dry, reapply a sealant if needed.

Aluminum

Aluminum docks are lightweight but durable. This material is less susceptible to decay and other types of damage. To clean aluminum docks, apply an oxalic acid-based cleaning solution to break down all the dirt, mold, and mildew. Use a soft wash system, with about 500 PSI, to remove all the unwanted substances. Keep the wand 10-12 inches away from the surface.

Composite

Pressure washing can remove dirt, mold, mildew, debris, stains, and other unwanted substances from composite docks. Use a power wash system with 1,500 PSI to prevent any kind of damage. Keep the wand 6-8 inches above the surface and the motion should go with the grain of the composite surface.

How to Clean Different Types of Docks

Docks can be made from different materials and each type comes with its own pros and cons. No matter the type, though, they will all require regular cleaning and maintenance. Here are the different types of dock material and how to clean them.

Hardwood

Hardwoods like Ipe, Camaru, and Tigerwood are very durable, but they still need regular maintenance. Pressure washing is a great way to clean these types of docks. A low-pressure setting can already be very effective but hardwood can withstand 1,200 to 1,500 PSI. Make sure to keep the wand 6-8 inches above the surface.

Softwood

Softwoods like cedar or pine require more care than hardwoods. Use a low-pressure setting of about 500 to 600 PSI. A rotating fan tip nozzle also helps remove all the buildup and stains without causing damage. Make sure to keep the wand 12-18 inches from the surface.

Pressure Treated Wood

Pressure-treated wood is a great material for docks because it has been sealed to prevent moisture and rotting. Pressure washing is still important as it removes all the buildup that comes when in an aquatic environment. When using oxygenated cleaners to remove mold, mildew, and other substances, stick to a low-pressure setting of 500 PSI. Without a cleaning solution, increase PSI to 1,500 to 2,000 PSI.

Benefits of Professional Dock Cleaning Services

Many choose to clean their docks themselves with varying degrees of success. While DIY cleaning is a popular choice, nothing beats dock cleaning conducted by experienced professionals. Here are some reasons why you should hire a professional dock cleaning service:

Saves Time and Money

If you try to clean your dock alone, you run the risk of using the wrong kind of cleaning solution or technique. You’ll end up buying more products and spending more days cleaning your dock to just correct your error, which you could’ve easily avoided by getting professional help. While hiring a service does cost money, doing it yourself arguably costs more.

Complements Your Boat

Well-worn docks are an eyesore and don’t compliment your boat. Imagine walking down a dirty dock just so you can get to your clean-as-a-whistle boat. It doesn’t sound that appealing, does it? Dirt and grime build-up can cake your dock. With the help of professional service, though, you can have a dock that looks good as new and goes well with your shiny boat.

Tailored Cleaning

Not all docks are created equal. Similarly, not all docks age the same as well. Professionals inspect your dock prior to cleaning to assess its condition and material. With this evaluation in mind, they can choose the best cleaning method to restore your dock to its former glory without the risk of damage. If the dock is well beyond repair, professionals will let you know.

A Safe Place to Dock

Many people (including you) will visit your dock, so it’s critical that you keep the area as safe as possible. Algae and other contaminants on docks can be extremely slippery when wet. Therefore, it’s essential to keep these areas clean and reduce the possibility of injury.

Extend Dock Life

A proper pressure washing can get your dock looking its best. But, the most important function of the wash is to maintain the structural integrity of your dock. Without proper maintenance, your surfaces will chip, crack, rust, or degrade over time. Prolong the life of your dock by performing routine pressure washing that gets rid of all debris and contaminants.
