Rust Removal

Rust stains will make any home look unsightly. You can find them on your driveway, your siding, or even your roof. If left alone, these orange-brown stains can lead to structural problems in your property.

It’s always best to address rust stains as soon as possible because they can be very difficult to remove. You can rely on the professional rust removal services of Powerwashing Genie to make your residence always look its best.

Common Areas Where Rust Can Accumulate

Rust can be found on a variety of surfaces, and each one requires specific steps for removal. Powerwashing Genie provides rust removal for the following surfaces:

Brick

Soft washing is an effective way of removing stubborn rust stains from brick surfaces. Use low-pressure water to wet the surface. This is so that the brick doesn’t absorb the cleaning agents. Then, apply a muriatic acid-based solution onto the brick surface. Allow it to saturate the brick surface for a few minutes. Use a soft wash system, preferably with 500 PSI, to rinse the brick surface.

Concrete

Apply an acid-based cleaning solution to concrete surfaces. This minimizes the safety hazards that come with using an acid solution. Allow the solution to saturate the surface and let it dry. Repeat until rust stains disappear. Then, use a pressure washer with at least 3,000 PSI, to dilute the remaining solution and remove it from the concrete surface.

Asphalt

Apply rust remover solution on the rust-stained asphalt surface. Allow the solution to sit. Repeat the process until the stains start to lift. Then, use a pressure washer with at least 3,000 PSI to remove rust stains and other debris from the surface. Allow the asphalt surface to dry so that it hardens. Consider applying a rust primer and seal coat to prevent the rust from coming back.

Roof Shingles

Shingles are delicate surfaces, so it’s better to use a soft wash system to remove rust stains. Use a soft washer to wet the shingles. Then, apply a bleach-based cleaning solution on the surface and let it soak for 5-10 minutes. Apply low-pressure water to rinse the treated area. Use at least 500 PSI but do not go over 1,500 PSI. Repeat the process to clean the entire roof.

Vinyl Siding

Pressure washing can effectively remove rust stains from vinyl siding. However, power washing can provide faster results. Hot water, combined with at least 2,000 PSI, will quickly loosen up the rust stains that have accumulated on your siding. Spray at a direct angle to prevent water from going inside the vinyl siding and causing water damage.

Stucco

Pressure washing stucco surfaces will require a delicate touch to avoid damage. First, use low-pressure water to saturate the surface. Apply a rust remover to the affected areas and let the solution sit for 5-10 minutes. Use a rotating scrub brush to loosen the rust stains. After, use a pressure washer to rinse the surface. Remember to only use 1,500 to 2,500 PSI and clean from top to bottom. Make sure the wand is 2 to 2 ½ feet away.

Tile

To clean rust stains from tile and grout, apply a lemon juice-and-borax solution to the surface. Allow to sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Then, use a pressure washer to clean the surface. A low PSI of about 800 to 1,200 is enough to effectively clean tiles without causing any damage.

Wood

Pressure washing can remove rust stains from wood but you need to proceed with caution to prevent damage. Use 500 to 600 PSI for softwoods and a maximum of 1,200 PSI for harder woods. Keep a uniform, 12-inch distance from the surface, and start cleaning from the outside going in.
